Getting closer to the first FM ISO certification

A few intense years passed since July 2011, when the ISO Facility Management Committee was established and we started working on the standardization process to produce the first international norms in Facility Management. We started with upgrading the first two European FM Standards, raising them to ISO level.  We then set our sights on achieving on the establishment of a Management System Standard, something that would offer the potential for FM to gain international recognition as a strategic professional discipline.  This will provide the FM market with several benefits including that an FM organization, inhouse or outsourced, can demonstrate their competence as a True Facility Management organization and be accredited accordingly via a certification body.  It also enable corporate and public sector procurement organization to now stipulate their requirements for FM to be with those service provider organizations who comply with the standard ISO 41001 Facility Management.  This is similar to what happens with other standards like in quality (ISO 9001), environment (ISO 14001) or energy (ISO 50001).

Although three of them were published at the end of last year, like ISO 41011 “vocabulary”, ISO 41012 “Guidance on strategic sourcing and the development of agreements” and the technical report ISO 41013 “Scope, key concepts and benefits”, the MMS 41001 has just been approved on 2 March. Next step is the official publication.

How to participate?

Collaborating with the Observatorio FM is a personal and voluntary decision, and there is no contractual obligation or economic retribution for it.

Any interested person can apply to participate as a leader of a new project, or apply as a collaborator in an existing one.

A technical committee will evaluate the subject matter of the proposed projects and the applications of the participants, deciding which ones are carried out and by whom.

Each person decides how much they want to dedicate, depending on their availability or type of project. The aim is for it to be an altruistic activity and not an additional workload.

What does it consist of?

To promote and publish studies that help professionals in the sector and to help others understand our profession and discipline.

The results and deliverables are shared openly, always acknowledging the contributions of all authors and contributors.

The Observatorio FM’s activity will respect the objectivity, ethics, rigour and good practices that govern our Research area.

Contributors have access to the best collaborative tools, sectoral information and contacts, as well as the assistance of expert consultants and researchers at international level.
